AK-47 Arsenal Seized in Protea Glen Bust.

A major breakthrough in the fight against illegal firearms has rocked the streets of Soweto. The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Protea Glen made a significant arrest following a vehicle stop that led to the discovery of an arms cache, including four AK-47 rifles and hundreds of rounds of live ammunition. The bust took place in Protea Glen Extension 28 and has sparked a deeper investigation into the source of the weapons.

According to the SAPS statement released on 23 October 2025, members of the Protea Trio Task Team and the Crime Prevention Unit intercepted a silver Mercedes-Benz with no number plates at approximately 18:45 on Wednesday, 22 October 2025. Upon conducting a search, police uncovered a shocking arsenal inside the vehicle — four AK-47 rifles, ten AK-47 magazines, 329 live rounds of AK-47 ammunition, and 21 rounds of R5 rifle ammunition.

A 39-year-old man was arrested on the scene and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court. Law enforcement officials have since launched an investigation to determine the origin of the weapons and whether they are connected to other criminal activities across Johannesburg and surrounding areas.

The seizure marks one of the most significant gun recoveries in recent months in Gauteng. Police have praised the alertness of their officers during the stop-and-search operation, which may have prevented future acts of violent crime involving high-caliber weapons.

SAPS spokespersons emphasized that illegal firearms continue to fuel violent crimes, gang activities, and cash-in-transit heists in the province. This operation, they say, sends a strong message that the police will not relent in their efforts to disarm criminal networks.

As investigations continue, the bust in Protea Glen highlights the ongoing challenge of illegal gun trafficking in South Africa’s townships. With the suspect now in custody and the weapons seized, SAPS aims to trace the firearms’ origins and uncover any potential links to organized crime. The community has been urged to assist by reporting any suspicious activity related to illegal firearms.

The swift action by Protea Glen police stands as a reminder that vigilance, teamwork, and proactive policing remain key in curbing the tide of gun violence in Ekasi.
